Reviving Eelgrass Ecosystems: Formas Grants SEK 14 million to Zorro's Ambitious Project

Eelgrass meadows play a key role in the functioning of the ecosystem. For example, they provide nurseries for several important fish species such as cod and eels, and increase biodiversity many times compared to a soft bottom without eel grass. Photo: Jonas Thormar

The Zorro research group has secured SEK 14 million from Formas to innovate tools that aim to restore and protect eelgrass meadows in Sweden. This endeavor supports Formas's mission to bridge climate, water, and biodiversity. Notably, the project will identify climate-resistant eelgrass genotypes and evaluate rewilding efforts, such as the extensive restoration in Malmö's former industrial harbour.
