The research project "Digital Right to Repair," led by Katja de Vries, an associate senior lecturer in public law at the Department of Law, has been included in the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences' (IVA) 100 list for 2023. The list aims to recognize research projects with the potential to generate future benefits and foster collaboration between researchers and companies. The project focuses on studying how the concept of repair applies to software and the digital Right to Repair (R2R). By utilizing interdisciplinary methods from social science, law, and sustainable ICT design, the project aims to address the issue of electronic devices that still function in terms of hardware but become obsolete due to a lack of software updates and compatibility with new applications. The "Digital Right to Repair" project seeks to minimize e-waste and promote the repair of smart electronics, considering the growing environmental impact of e-waste globally. The EU is currently developing Right to Repair legislation to encourage and facilitate repairs as a means of mitigating this issue.
