Nature-based solutions have great potential in the Nordic countries

A study conducted by the Nordic Council of Ministers, involving researchers from Lund University, emphasizes the need for improved management, funding, and political priorities to effectively implement nature-based solutions. Nature-based solutions, such as sustainable land use, wetland restoration, and the creation of green spaces, are increasingly recognized as means to address climate change and biodiversity loss. The report provides an overview of the current status of nature-based solutions in the Nordic countries, including research, management structures, challenges, and completed projects. The researchers identify five key points for achieving success in implementing nature-based solutions: clear political prioritization, efficient institutional structures, improved financing mechanisms, common standards and monitoring, and enhanced knowledge throughout the project phases. The report calls for coordinated efforts across sectors, including agriculture, forestry, and urban areas, with collaboration among central authorities and the use of consistent policy instruments. The findings were presented during the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt.
