Danish innovation to convert nutrients and CO2 from land-based shrimp and fish farming into high value seaweed

The University of Copenhagen, in collaboration with Aarhus University and several companies, is leading an innovation project called SeaFree, which aims to develop a closed and sustainable cycle of fish, shrimp, and seaweed production. The project involves utilizing residual nutrients and CO2 from land-based shrimp and fish farming to grow high-value seaweed, specifically sea lettuce, for human consumption. The seaweed will be used in dietary supplements that can help prevent diabetes and contribute to sustainable food innovations. SeaFree seeks to capture emissions that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere and aquatic environment, while also producing healthy and flavorful seaweed. The project involves a container-based system that combines saltwater, CO2, nutrients, and LED lights to produce a batch of seaweed in just one week. The surplus heat from the system is recirculated and used to dry the seaweed, which can then be sold to the healthcare industry. SeaFree has the potential to reduce the CO2 footprint of global food systems and may create a new Danish export market by combining aquaculture and seaweed cultivation in closed systems. The project has received funding of DKK 14.4 million (€1.9 million) from Innovation Fund Denmark and has garnered international interest, including from South Korea.
